New feature proposals

This is a discussion group for requesting new features to be added to VantagePoint. Please indicate if the request is for an import "Filter", "Macro", or "Program" improvement.

Include all Import filters, macros, and thesauri in VPv6 install

Lately it seems each new customer is downloading all of the import filters from the web site.  We routinely get 150-200 hits from a new customer as they download everything.

If they are putting this stuff in their Import Filters folder, then startup of import will be painfully slow.

What about installing all of the current import filters in a sub-folder of Import Filters?

New features (later on)? UI to "add an import filter to my current selections"; "check the web site for an update to this import filter" (automatically?).

So is this a bandwidth problem, a user training problem, or a users don't trust that we'll be in business next week problem?

If we do end up including a kitchen sink zip file, we could take everything off the download site that isn't new since the current release.

RE: Webb's Question: "So is this a bandwidth problem, a user training problem, or a users don't trust that we'll be in business next week problem?"

I know of at least one instance where it's a customer whose subscription is expiring doing a last-minute grab.

Regardless, If we don't include all configs in the installation, maybe a kitchen sink zip archive would be good to have - or perhaps one-per-data provider would be handier from the user's perspective.

An idea for implementation - create a Sub-Feature in the MSI  for each data providers so the user can opt to install all, or just some of the filters along with VP.

I don't think we should make an MSI feature for each data provider -- won't that make our MSI maintenance much more difficult?  Also, if someone chooses STN, the would get them all including the fringe ones.  This approach might work well for single purpose DB, like Delphion or Micropatent.

This is not a bandwidth problem (except for Kathy and me wading through 150 e-mail messages when someone does this).  I think Dave has it right -- frequently it is a mega-grab after the customer receives their renewal invoice.

Unless we want to build in some sort of import filter manager, I'm generally going to be against including all the import filters.  I'm fine with adding zipped bundles to the download site.
